Portsmouth

I heard a while back that Portsmouth is the restaurant capital of the east coast-that they had more restaurants per capita than any other place on the east coast. Now I can't conferm that. Its just heresay, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Obviously, New York has the most restaurants, but we're talking "per capita".

Regardless of the number, Portsmouth is a haven for Restaurants. You can get anykind of food. Now, I haven't been to EVERY restaurant in Portsmouth but, the ones I HAVE been to have a good atmosphere, good food, and reasonable pricing.

Bottle Bill

There is no bottle bill in New Hampshire. You'll see cans and bottles in the trash with all the other stuff. This may be a bit different for you (depending on the state you're from). I don't know why. Apparently, the state doesn't want to get in between the buyer and seller at all. There is recycling, but no deposits.

Motorcycles

The highlight for cyclists is probably Motorcycle Week when all shapes and sizes of bikers converge on Weirs Beach. This is the oldest rally of its kind in America. It started in 1916 when motorcycling was in its infancy as a sport.

Much of New Hampshire, particularly the Lakes region, is taken over by motorcycles each June. Don't be surprized if lodging is sold out for that week. In 2004, they hit an all time high for attendance - 375,000! Thats a lot of bikes!

There is no helmet law in New Hampshire which many love for about four months of the year. They seem to take the slogan "Live Free or Die" literally.

Granite State

New Hampshire is known as 'The Granite State' for its extensive granite deposits. If truth be known, more granite is mined in Vermont.

Castle in the clouds

Back in 1913, a guy named Thomas Plante, built this home. (Notice I said 'home' - not castle). Mr Plant made his fortune in shoe manufacturing. After retiring, he sold his company to United Shoe Machine Company which made him a millionaire.
He turned his attention to his new estate, nicknamed 'Lucknow'. I guess he didn't care for neighbors because after buying the Ossipee Mountain Park, he gradually accumulated 6300 acres! Some of it in a rather ruthless manner. On which now stands: A Cafe, Gift Shop, Hiking Trails, Art Exhibits, a much more I'm told. Plan a wedding or corporate meetings there. Your friends will be impressed.

Like so many who had so much, Thomas Plante died with substantially much less than he once had. After a few poor investments, he attempted to sell the estate from the mid 20s through the great depression, but no one bit. It was eventually repossessed by the bank. A year later in 1941, he died.

After that...
